Today was a productive day. We decided to use the utility trailer to clean out broken stuff from the garage. We packed it all up and covered it with a tarp and tied the contents down to take it to the dump.
We got about 2 miles from the house. When someone frantically flagged us down. We rolled down the window and he yelled "there's a cat in your trailer!" We immediately pulled over as soon as we could. I jumped out and began calling for the kitty. I didn't know which cat it was, but soon popped out Declan from the rear end, way underneath the tarp. He ran right to me and I put him in the car.
He traveled with us to the dump and was being such a sweet heart in the car. Declan is the least affectionate cat of the 3, but not after his near death experience! He was all purrs and head bunts.
I am not sure what possessed him to want to be under a smelly hot tarp, but I am thankful he was okay. I am still shocked that he didn't jump out. We hit several stop lights and made many turns before we were notified. He could have chosen to leave at any point, but he didn't. When we got home he continued to be a love. We even went on a neighborhood walk with the dogs and he followed me the entire way with his tail straight up. It was out of character for him. He seems very connected to me today for some reason...maybe he understands how truly lucky he was to remain safe given the situation he was in. I know now how curious cats are and will be extra careful with stuff like this. I will be double and triple checking for sneaky kitties!
